On World Dog Day, we celebrate the joy of jumps, licks, and wagging tails, but also the invisible bonds. Deep, silent bonds, yet full of complicity. They are what transform difficult nights into hope and ordinary days into eternal memories. Loving a dog is discovering that the heart can speak another language, a language made of presence and affection. For some, a dog is just a pet. For others, and I include myself, they are an essential part of the family, and it is in this space of affection that the love of pet parents is born, a love that needs no labels to be true.

My Dog, My Son

Yes, my dog is my son!
Not as my son... not a substitute son, my son!
You can't measure the depth of this bond from the outside...
You didn't see the nights we sat on the bathroom floor at 3 a.m., me holding him through his seizures, whispering promises that I would move heaven and earth to keep him safe.
You didn't see the day he stood by me, refusing to leave my side, as if he knew something was wrong.
You don't know how he presses against my chest during moments of sadness, his weight being the only thing that anchors me to reality.
A child is not defined by shared DNA or a birth certificate.
A child is a being you would walk through fire for.
The one whose pain hurts more than yours.
The soul you pledged to protect, nurture, and care for until your last breath.
When I call him my son, I'm not joking or being cute.
I am acknowledging a sacred responsibility.
I choose his food as carefully as I choose my own.
I research his health more carefully than my own.
I organize my life around his needs, without resentment.
I save for his medical care before my own luxuries.
And what does he give me in return?
Gives the purest love any mother (or father) has ever received.
It gives forgiveness that no one could match.
It gives loyalty that surpasses human promises.
It brings days of joy and teaches lessons of presence that no parenting book could contain.
So when you say it's not the same thing, you're right.
Because this love exists without expectations, without conditions, without complications.
When he looks at me, I am his world, and he is mine.
So yes, my dog is my child, and I don't need your understanding or approval.
I just need you to respect the sacred space of a family that is different from yours.
Yes, my dog is my son!

On World Dog Day, we celebrate the privilege of sharing our lives with our four-legged children.

Being a pet parent means living the responsibility of caring for a life that depends entirely on us. It means choosing their food with care, monitoring every detail of their health, and making room in your routine so they feel safe and loved. And when I think about all the experiences I've had with dogs, I remember the daily exercise of surrender, without demands or conditions. Today, on World Dog Day, we'll also celebrate how lucky we are to have been chosen by them to share our lives.
